Breast Pathology for the Practicing Pathologist

This 3 day course and workshop is designed for general surgical pathologists, pathologists with a specialty interest in breast pathology, and pathologists-in-training. The aim of the course is to provide participants with a comprehensive review and update of selected topics in breast pathology. The lecturers are leaders in the field who will give their perspectives on a variety of subjects, ranging from atypical ductal proliferations to common and unusual tumors and tumor-like lesions of the breast. There will be opportunities to bring one's own cases for consultation and discussion during the breaks and after the scheduled program. The course includes lectures and slide seminar discussions, and printed and electronic handout materials will be available.

Edi Brogi, MD PhD
Director of Breast Pathology and Attending Pathologist

Dr. Edi Brogi is an Attending Pathologist and the Director of Breast Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She is a graduate of the Medical School at the University of Florence, Italy, and holds a Ph.D. degree from Italian State University. She completed her residency training in Anatomic Pathology and fellowship training in Cytopathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Brogi’s professional activities focus exclusively on the diagnosis, study and treatment of breast diseases, particularly breast carcinoma. Her research addresses problematic issues in the diagnosis and management of breast lesions, and investigates the biology of breast carcinoma, ranging from its morphologic precursors to distant metastases.

Dr. Melinda Lerwill received her B.A. degree from Johns Hopkins University and her M.D. degree summa cum laude from Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency training in Anatomic Pathology and her fellowship training in Breast and Gynecological Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Lerwill is Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and Associate Pathologist, Co-Director of the Breast Pathology Service, and Co-Director of the Breast Pathology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her research interests focus on early neoplasia of the breast,biphasic tumors of the breast, use of immunohistochemistry in diagnostic breast pathology, and metastatic tumors to the gynecological tract.
